Sidney (Sid) Holmes

1925 – 2003

Sid Holmes passed away suddenly at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on December 17, 2003, in his 78th year.

Born in Yorkshire in 1925, he started playing cornet at the age of 10 and was playing professionally by the age of 16. He joined the British Army at the age of 18 and, after World War II, played with a number of well-known British bands and orchestras. In 1957, Sid emigrated to Canada and played with the Canadian Guards Band in Petawawa for six years before transferring to the Central Band of the Canadian Forces in 1963.

After retiring from the service, Sid played with many local bands at such places as the NAC, CBC, CJOH and the Orpheus Operatic Society. Sid was a good friend to, and was highly regarded by, everyone who knew him or had the opportunity to work with him. He will indeed be missed by everyone in Local 180.

Rest in peace, Sid.
