Winifred (Winnie) Canty
1918 – 2006
Peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the Perley Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. Winifred was 88 years old.
She was a frequent accompanist for Orpheus productions in the1960s. Win was co-accompanist with Lorna Rice for West Side Story back in 1967. She also accompanied for the Ottawa Little Theatre and for Nancy Turner’s Theatre for Children in the 1970s (sponsored by the Ottawa Little Theatre).
Her surviving sister, Audrey, was the original Dolly and Mame at Orpheus in the 1970s. The Canty sisters (there were two others as well!) were a much-loved part of the Ottawa theatre scene. Win was also a wonderful piano teacher. Even in recent years, Win would often come to special events at Orpheus House.
The Ottawa Little Theatre website lists the productions Winifred was involved in from 1948 to 1975.
